John G. Shedd Aquarium

An underwater experience. Environmental design for the gift shop in Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. We worked with Frederic Schwartz Architects in developing the graphic approach and color system, creating fixtures, informational panels, and mural designs that prove a retail environment can be educational and entertaining.

The gift shop has an underwater theme, featuring an upside-down octopus with video monitor eyes encircled by a frieze of aquatic facts.

The display fixtures incorporate Plexiglas coral. The book section features passages from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Moby-Dick, and Treasure Island.

The displays are educational: Adjacent to oversized models of sea creatures are informational panels that discuss their scale and habitat.
