Staten Island Ferry Terminal

Going big We developed a signage and environmental graphic program for lower Manhattan’s transportation hub, working in association with longtime collaborators Frederic Schwartz Architects.

The focus of the installation is a frieze of 12-foot-tall illuminated letters, engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds.

Installation shots. The custom-engineered letters incorporate a protective screen designed to prevent pigeons from nesting.

The program includes interior directional and environmental signage, incorporating an excerpt from a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay (“We were very tired, we were very merry — We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry”).

We believe poetry and architecture go well together.

As an additional part of the program, we created a series of short films that were displayed over the ferry slips.

The films addressed the topics of water, art, transportation, time, the Statue of Liberty, and faces of New York.
