The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

A website for a one-of-a-kind institution The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art enjoys an international reputation for celebrating (and advocating) the art of children’s literature.

They asked us to develop a new website to tell their story.

The site provides a lively, engaging, and thorough survey of the museum’s offerings and programs, including a robust “digital bookshop” e-commerce portal. As one might expect, we had a wealth of wonderful artwork with which to work. Our challenge was to find the best way to celebrate it.

The website’s home page features Frederick, Leo Lionni’s curious little mouse, whose eyes follow the viewer’s cursor as it moves around the screen.

We worked with the museum’s leadership team and consulting Art Director Rita Marshall to develop a visual approach that showcases their extraordinary collection and exhibitions.

Our challenge was to develop a format that could accommodate a large amount of text, presenting it in a way that is informative and engaging (and easy to update) — while still enabling us to emphasize the illustrations.

Identity for the 50th anniversary of Eric Carle’s “Brown Bear” book, including the development of a dedicated microsite.
